Bluey Maths

Bluey is my favourite children’s TV show (and quite possibly favourite show, full stop). It is an Australian animated show that illustrates family life in the most beautiful way. The characters- adults and children- speak to each other with love, respect, humour and a sense of fun, and it is honestly a pleasure to watch every Bluey episode.

Lately as we watch Bluey (some episodes for the 100th time), I have been noticing how Numeracy concepts are cleverly embedded into the storylines.

As you can imagine, I love a TV show that includes maths… but it is big bonus points from me, if the maths is integrated through authentic play-based scenarios.

Too often when we see maths on TV or in movies, it is shown as “hard” or “geeky” or something that seems to only happen in school classrooms.

Bluey shows the authentic moments that happen everyday, in every household, that can become “Maths Moments”. And if you know me… you would know that is right in my wheelhouse (this blog explains why)!

So, with that in mind I thought I would make a list of my top 4 Bluey episodes (there are MANY more) that include Numeracy themes so you can keep an eye out for them.

  • “Hotel” (Season 1, Episode 10): Bluey and Bingo set up a hotel in their house and stick room numbers on the doors. A fantastic way to work on number recognition and ordering numbers✅. Watch us playing here.

  • “Takeaway” (Season 1, Episode 14):Bluey and Bingo are waiting with their dad for their Takeaway order. They discuss that their order will be ready in 5 minutes. Bluey asks “How long is 5 minutes?” Dad answers “One episode of Chutney Chips” I love this answer… comparing it to a length of time the kids are familiar with!

  • “The Dump” (Season 1, Episode 35): Colour Car Game- Bluey and Bingo play the colour car game while they are in the car. The object of the game is to find cars with specific colours. This is a classic game, where children are refining their Classifying and Sorting skill✅!

  • “Hide and Seek” (Season 1, Episode 42): In this episode Bluey and Bingo play some very entertaining games of hide and seek- cue counting✅.Here is a video of us playing Hide and Seek.

So, there you have it… Bluey is sooo good in soooo many ways, but it even has some super maths weaved in! The producers are pure genius!

This week I encourage you to watch any of these episodes with your child. If they are anything like my Miss 4, they will not doubt be inspired to try the games Bluey and Bingo play.

At our house we have played so many games as a direct result of watching Bluey. In my mind there is nothing better than authentic play… particularly play that involves maths!

Head over to Instagram and  let me know your favourite episode of Bluey (For the record, apart from the ones above, my favourite is “Bike” because it celebrates some amazing examples of children persisting)
